Private plans are sold outside the government Marketplace. They are medically underwritten, which means your health history is reviewed as part of the application, and that review affects whether you qualify and what you pay. For people in good health this often means a lower monthly cost and a wider choice of doctors than a comparable Marketplace plan.
Marketplace plans cannot turn anyone down for health reasons, but the enhanced federal subsidies that kept them affordable expired at the end of 2025, so many self-employed people are now paying the full price.
You are not out of options. The income cliff returned for the 2026 plan year, so earning a dollar over the limit removes the subsidy entirely and you pay the full premium. This is the situation private plans were built for.
If you are reasonably healthy, a medically underwritten plan is often far cheaper than an unsubsidised Marketplace plan, with better benefits attached. The only way to know which side you fall on is to compare both, which is what the free call is for.
